We all remember that moment, watching Game 6 of the NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs holding a 3-2 lead on the Miami Heat. An unforgettable play that crippled an opponent on the basketball court. A Big 3 has never seemed more evil…

But what if he had missed that…

  • What if Duncan wins his fifth and eventually sixth ring to make the Timmy (6) vs Kobe (5) conversation a no brainer?
  • What if this loss made LeBron feel homesick one year earlier, he forces a trade to Cleveland and the Cavs win too many games — no Wiggins and no Love?
  • What if those Indiana Pacers made the Eastern Finals instead of Miami and perhaps we’re seeing Paul George’s first ring? Not to mention Andrew Bynum/Lance Stephenson/Roy Hibbert…

LeBron James would have one less ring, which kills me as the haters would have even more ammunition, but the Spurs would be on the same level as Jordan/Pippen and could arguably be called the most successful franchise in modern history…

Just a thought.

The ‘What Ifs?’ drive our imagination. This Wednesday column covers trades that never happened, contracts never signed, and draft picks never taken. I play architect to a glorious hoop world that could have been.
