Welcome to the inaugural Press Awards, created by the people, for the people.

There’s no red carpet or glitz and glamor here. Just some trophies that make actual damn sense.

Our awards are based on the entire basketball season, so that includes the Olympics, the regular season, and the playoffs combined.

We had a panel of 12 Press Basketball staff members vote anonymously on each award, and the results were surprising, entertaining, and insightful.

We gave out seven awards this season, with each award video narrated by a member of our team along with a montage by Andrew Hamilton.

Enjoy this. It’s our gift to you:

NBA Legacy Award

This was our fan award where NBA Twitter decided which player cemented their legacy in the history books and NBA lore most this season. Nominees were Kevin Durant, James Harden, LeBron James, and Russell Westbrook. Narrated by Press’ Director of Operations, Andrew Hamilton:

No Country For Old Men Award

This award is dedicated to the old gunslingers of the NBA; the grey haired cowboys still out on the range. Inspired by the ongoing writing series of the same name. Nominees were Vince Carter, Manu Ginobili, Joe Johnson, and Dirk Nowitzki. Narrated by Press’ Editor-in-Chief, Marc Griffin:

NBA Rising Star Award

There is more young talent in the NBA today than we’ve seen since the days of Michael, Charles, and Mailman. We had to pin it down to the best young guy under 25. Nominees were Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Kristaps Porzingis, and Karl-Anthony Towns. Narrated by Press’ Executive Producer, Phil Boileau:

Best NBA Surprise Award

A lot of shocking and completely out-of-left-field things happened in the league this year. Nominees include Kevin Durant signing with Golden State, Mike D’Antoni’s three-point revolution in Houston, the late bloomer Isaiah Thomas, and the birth of Nikola Jokic. Narrated by Press’ Content Curator, Ryan Antonio Henry:

Best Basketball Player On The Planet Award

No more confusion and debate on what exactly an “MVP” is. We get to the heart of the matter. The nominees were Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Kawhi Leonard. Narrated by Press Writer and Editor, John Gaudes:

Best NBA Journalist Award

This is a very prestigious award where we decided not to have a list of nominees. We left the field wide open and our 12 judges put down the name of whoever the hell they wanted. Surprisingly, there was only person who received more than one vote; in fact, our winner had five total. Narrated by Press Editor and Writer, Joshua Howe:

Sons Of Naismith Award

Our NCAA award named after the Canadian who invented basketball and who coached the college game for many a moon. The nominees were Lonzo Ball, Frank Mason, Caleb Swanigan, and Nigel Williams-Goss. Narrated by Press’ Sons Of Naismith columnist, Eric Fawcett:

Thank you all once again for being part of our rookie season. We appreciate everything you’ve done to cheer us on. For the people, by the people.

Old school. New media.

Forever yours,

Marc Griffin & Joshua Howe
